The Next Tab, General Overview, introduces the Digital Business Community concept, the organisations it is designed to support, and the value it can create.
What is a Digital Business Community in practical terms?
A Digital Business Community helps organisations coordinate knowledge, business services, trade intelligence and community engagement within a structured operating environment that supports SME growth, business development and international trade.
What problem does A Digital Business Community address?
Many organisations provide valuable services to SMEs, but these are often delivered through separate systems and activities. A Digital Business Community helps coordinate these resources within a structured business environment, strengthening SME engagement and supporting business development and international trade.
Who are Digital Business Communities designed for?
Digital Business Communities are designed for organisations that support SME development.
Typical Business Community Owners include banks, telecommunications providers, chambers of commerce, trade associations and export promotion organisations.
Why should our organisation establish a Digital Business Community?
A Digital Business Community helps organisations strengthen SME engagement, increase the value of existing services, improve market visibility and create new opportunities for business development.
It complements existing structures and services while providing a structured foundation for sustainable growth.
What makes a Digital Business Community different from export portals or directories?
Traditional portals and directories primarily provide information or listings. A Digital Business Community coordinates market visibility, business services, knowledge resources, trade intelligence and community engagement within a single operating framework.
How is information managed within a Digital Business Community?
A Digital Business Community brings together trusted business information, knowledge resources, services and opportunities from multiple contributors within a coordinated framework.
Rather than relying on a single communication channel, information can be presented through the most appropriate formats and channels, including the Business Knowledge Centre, news updates, email communications, events, webinars and, where appropriate, AI-assisted services.
This helps ensure that members receive relevant, timely and practical information while enabling the Business Community Owner to maintain consistent engagement across the community.
Who contributes information and business resources to a Digital Business Community?
A Digital Business Community is designed to coordinate trusted business information, knowledge resources and business services contributed by multiple trusted organisations.
These may include the Business Community Owner, Implementation Partners, chambers of commerce, trade associations, government agencies, universities, financial institutions, technology providers and other trusted organisations.
By coordinating information and resources from a wide range of contributors within a single framework, the Digital Business Community can provide SMEs with more comprehensive, relevant and practical support.
How does a Digital Business Community relate to the Protegra Framework?
The Protegra Framework provides the methodology, architecture and content required to implement a Digital Business Community.
It guides organisations through the Discovery Workshop, Foundation Proposal, Foundation Phase and Progressive Expansion.
The Next Tab, Implementation, explains how a Digital Business Community is implemented, including the Foundation Phase, implementation approach and the resources required to get started.
How long does it take to get started?
Implementation begins with a Discovery Workshop, which normally requires around half a day.
The workshop results in a Foundation Proposal, tailored to the objectives, priorities and existing capabilities of the Business Community Owner.
Do we need specialist expertise to manage a Digital Business Community?
No. Business Community Owners can continue to focus on supporting their SME communities rather than developing specialist expertise in community management, business information management or AI .
Implementation Partners provide the guidance, methodology and ongoing support needed to establish and develop the Digital Business Community. Where appropriate, AI-assisted tools can further support business information management, member engagement and routine administrative activities, allowing existing staff to focus on higher-value initiatives.
Does implementing a Digital Business Community require significant internal IT development?
No. Digital Business Communities are designed to be deployed without complex internal development or new system builds. They work alongside existing systems and can be expanded progressively over time.
Where appropriate, a Digital Business Community can build on an organisation's existing digital infrastructure and community platform.
What internal resources are required?
Most organisations require only limited executive involvement during the Foundation Phase. Day-to-day implementation is supported by the Implementation Partner and TradeTech Solutions.
Can Digital Business Communities be introduced gradually?
Yes. The Foundation Phase establishes the core Digital Business Community. Additional capabilities can then be introduced progressively in line with organisational priorities.
What is the simplest Foundation Phase?
The Foundation Phase can begin by strengthening the visibility and engagement of an organisation's existing SME base.
Typical components include:
The scope of the Foundation Phase is agreed during the Discovery Workshop and reflects the organisation's priorities.
Are Digital Business Communities suitable for organisations of different sizes?
Yes. Digital Business Communities are scalable and can be adapted to organisations of different sizes, structures and levels of business development.
However, in practice, they are best suited to organisations with an established SME community. As community participation increases, organisations benefit from greater operational efficiency and stronger returns from their Digital Business Community.
What implementation support is available?
TradeTech Solutions provides the implementation methodology, architecture and content, together with the ongoing advisory support required to establish a Digital Business Community.
Support includes the Discovery Workshop, Foundation Proposal, implementation guidance, Knowledge Centre resources and ongoing advisory support.
Implementation Partners can therefore focus on local business development, client relationships and successful project delivery.
Can we use our existing community platform?
Yes. Where appropriate, a Digital Business Community can be built on an organisation's existing community platform or digital infrastructure. Where additional community capabilities are required, suitable enterprise platforms and integration approaches can be recommended during the Discovery Workshop.
How is the Foundation Phase defined?
Every Foundation Phase is different. The Discovery Workshop identifies the organisation's objectives, existing capabilities, language strategy, community platform and implementation priorities, which form the basis of a tailored Foundation Proposal.
Can we use our own branding?
Yes. Every Digital Business Community is tailored to the identity of the Business Community Owner. Branding, domain names, language strategy and community structure are agreed during the Discovery Workshop and reflected in the Foundation Proposal.
The Next Tab, Data Ownership & Governance, explains how data ownership, governance and system integration are managed within a Digital Business Community.
Who owns the data generated by the platform?
Each organisation retains ownership of its own data. TradeTech Solutions manages the data associated with the services it provides, while Business Community Owners retain ownership of the data generated through their own Digital Business Community and related systems.
Do Digital Business Communities require access to sensitive or personal data?
No. A Digital Business Community is designed to operate primarily using aggregated and anonymised data and does not require access to sensitive personal information for its core functionality.
Where personal data is processed, responsibility remains with the relevant organisation, which should manage such data in accordance with applicable data protection legislation.
Are Digital Business Communities compliant with GDPR and other data protection regulations?
Yes. A Digital Business Community is designed to support compliance with applicable data protection legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The operating model is based primarily on aggregated and anonymised information. Where personal data is processed, it should be managed by the relevant organisation in accordance with its legal and regulatory responsibilities.
Can a Digital Business Community integrate with our existing systems?
Yes. Where appropriate, a Digital Business Community can be built on existing websites, community platforms, CRM systems and other digital infrastructure. Integration requirements are identified during the Discovery Workshop and reflected in the Foundation Proposal.
The Next Tab, Getting Started, explains the first steps in exploring a Digital Business Community, including the initial discussion, Discovery Workshop and Foundation Proposal.
What is the first step in exploring a Digital Business Community?
The first step is an initial discussion to understand your organisation's objectives and determine whether a Digital Business Community is appropriate for your organisation.
Where there is mutual interest, the next step is a Discovery Workshop, which provides the basis for a tailored Foundation Proposal.
Should we carry out internal discussions before contacting you?
It is helpful to consider your organisation's objectives and priorities before contacting us, but this is not essential.
Many organisations begin with an initial discussion to understand the Digital Business Community concept before undertaking more detailed internal planning.
Is there any obligation to proceed after an initial discussion?
No. The initial discussion is entirely exploratory and allows both parties to determine whether a Digital Business Community is appropriate for the organisation's objectives and priorities.
What happens after the initial discussion?
Where there is mutual interest, a Discovery Workshop is arranged. This normally requires around half a day and is used to understand the organisation's objectives, review existing capabilities and prepare a tailored Foundation Proposal.
